Performance – software encoding

• Allow up to 1 GHz of processing per tuner

• Different codecs are available, some even requiring less CPU, but there are tradeoffs

• Some reported configurations (from HOWTO):

  • PIII/733MHz can encode one stream @ 480x480 using MPEG-4
  • P4/2.4GHz can encode two 3300Kbps streams @ 480x480 using MPEG-4
  • PIII/800MHz w/ 512MB RAM can encode one stream @ 480x480 using RTjpeg and play it back simultaneously
